Masao Kato


 

Masao Kato (加藤正夫 Katō Masao, March 15, 1947 - December 30, 2004) was a famous Japanese go player.

As a young player he was known as "The Killer" of go, due to his reputation for aggressive, attacking play. During his career, in which he reached the professional rank of 9 dan, he was a regular tournament winner. He also served as Chairman of the Nihon Ki-in. Kato was the sensei of Yukari Umezawa, who is currently at the rank of 5-dan.

His final weeks were spent in hospital due to a brain haemorrhage.

Kato is the author of The Chinese Opening: The Sure-Win Strategy. The book is published in English by Kiseido Publishing Company. His name is ordered in the book and in some Anglophone sources as Masao Kato, while many Go-related sources and websites order his name as Kato Masao. Another book, Kato's Attack and Kill, is published by Ishi Press. His name is also ordered as "Masao Kato" in the book.
