The General Assembly could also shake up the Gubernatorial election to boost the chances of electing a Democratic candidate for Governor and the U.S. Senate by changing the Primary election date (most likely to June). The current date was established only two months before the General election to assist incumbent politicians who, in the past, were mostly from the Democratic party. Senator Mike Miller, Democratic candidates for these offices, and the head of the Maryland Democratic Party, Terry Lierman, have all pushed for this change. Speaker Busch, however, has opposed such a change as it would assist Republican candidates for the state House, including challengers in his own district.
