Martin Rowson


 

Martin Rowson (born 15 February 1959) is a British cartoonist. His work frequently appears in The Guardian, although he is known to do freelance cartoons.

He went to school at Merchant Taylors' School, after which he moved to Pembroke College, Cambridge where he read English Literature. Martin is also known to be a member of the National Secular Society.

Martin is married to his wife of many years, Anna Clarke. In 1988, the two were blessed with a son, Fred Rowson, who was reportedly born during an earthquake. Like his father, Fred goes to a public school: Dulwich College.

Rowson has had a number of books published, including adaptations of The Waste Land and Tristram Shandy. He has also turned his hand to prose, writing a novel called Snatches, to be published in the UK by Jonathan Cape in January 2006 (ISBN 0224076043). It is reportedly a comic journey through history, focusing on the "stories of the worst decisions the human race has ever made".

Mr Rowson has also been invited to Number Ten and met Tony Blair. He has also been known to make appearances on BBC Radio 4. He has been appointed "Cartoonist Laureate" of London by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, and his cartoons appear in the Mayor's "newsletter", The Londoner.
