Martin Cahill
Martin Cahill, also known as the General, was a prominent Irish criminal. In the early 1990s, he gained a certain notoriety in the media, which referred to him by the sobriquet the General. The nickname - used by the media in order to discuss Cahill's activities while avoiding legal problems - was alleged to refer to his meticulous planning of robberies. During his lifetime, Cahill took particular care to hide his face from the media.

Cahill was gunned down in 1994, and the IRA claimed responsibility, but there are doubts as to the true architects of the killing.

Cahill had been involved in selling stolen paintings to an Ulster Volunteer Force gang from Portadown.

In 1998 John Boorman directed a movie about him called "The General". The movie won best director award at the Cannes Film Festival. The general movie was based on the book by Irish crime journalist, Paul Williams, who is also the crime editor of Ireland's best selling tabloid, The Sunday World.
