The tip is typically made of some porous material. When this is felt, it can also be called a felt-tipped pen. It is possible, though unusual, for a marker pen to have a non-porous tip. The manufacturer Pilot introduced in 2005 a permanent ink ball-point pen, which they call the Permaball.

A temporary marker uses an erasable ink - an ink that adheres to the writing surface without binding or being absorbed. Such non-permanent markers are intended for use on overhead projectors, whiteboards, or for use by children when adults want to be able to clean up after them.
