At his peak, he was probably the most popular American celebrity of his time. William Faulkner wrote he was "the first truly American writer, and all of us since are his heirs." Clemens maintained that the name "Mark Twain" came from his years on the riverboat, where two fathoms (12 ft or 3.7 m), or "safe water", was marked by calling "mark twain". But it is often thought that the name actually came from his wilder days in the West, where he would buy two drinks and tell the bartender to "mark twain" on his tab. The true origin is unknown. In addition to Mark Twain, Clemens used the pseudonym "Sieur Louis de Conte" for his fictionalized biography of Joan of Arc (1896).

Our cabin is a spectacular 1800 square feet home with a wrap around deck surrounded by hundreds of redwoods, located in California's central sierras mountain range. Great for cross country and downhill skiing and boarding, great for families or romantic get aways. Visit the Spa or microbrewery, hang out before the fireplace or under the stars and the redwoods. AVAILABLE APRIL 1, 2008 for weekend, weekly, and monthly rentals. Our cabin sleeps 8 in beds, or twelve with the pull out sofa beds. It has 3 bedrooms (two rooms with queen beds, one with four bunk beds) and two bathrooms, an open kitchen and dining room area with huge windows that overlooks the forest, and living room with stone tile hearth and a woodburning fireplace, as well as a large wrap around deck with hammock to swing in under the redwoods (in summer). It is elegant and tasteful, with leather couches and stone tile and lots of cedar. There's a washer/dryer, dishwasher, BBQ, hammock, picnic table, TV/cable/DVD, etc etc. Near-level drive. Access to family rec center is included with rental: located a short walk from our cabin, the rec center has two outdoor pools, including a children's pool, as well as games and playground under the trees, and organized activities including evening screenings of movies on a large screen under the stars. Cabin is located in Bear Valley, in the village Big Trees, Calaveras County, made famous by Mark Twain in his short story about the marvelous jumping frogs. The area is a popular destination in both summer and winter. In winter it is near the Bear Valley ski resort, with downhill and crosscountry skiing, sleding, boarding, skating, etc. In summer, the house is five minutes from the Big Trees State park where you can walk a marked trail through the forest and see the largest and oldest trees in the world - older than the Bible, with trunks as big as your house! There is swimming and fishing in Lake Alpine which is 20 minutes away, as well as white water rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, spectacular hiking, horseback riding, tubing, and spelunking --including adventure spelunks thorugh caves with underground lakes. The house is in the forest, but there are good restaurants in driving distance as well as a healthclub, spa, and microbreweries. If you like, a local masseuse will come to the cabin to give you a personal massage on the deck, under the redwoods, or in front of the fire. And, each may, 40,000 tourists arrive for the finals of a national series of jumping frog contests. RATES: The rates are flexible with the season.
