Mark 'Jacko' Jackson

Mark 'Jacko' Jackson, born August 30 1959, is a former Australian Rules footballer who played professionally for several teams, including St Kilda, Melbourne and Geelong.

Football career

As a football player, 'Jacko' was a full forward of great potential, who kicked many goals for Geelong, St Kilda and Melbourne, and was a real crowd-pleaser. After kicking a goal, 'Jacko' often did somersaults, a feat that has been copied by modern-day player Jason Akermanis, and would point to the crowd and so forth. It was during these stunts that 'Jacko' often went a bit too far. Most of his reports and suspensions were for over-celebrating or going too far in complaining about poor decisions. Like Tony Lockett, Jacko's greatest fear in football was of suspension, but unlike Tony Lockett, Jacko didn't survive for long enough in football for his true potential as a player to come out.

Always a controversial player, Jackson was sacked from St Kilda after placing live firecrackers into the pocket of a club official and later retired after his omission from the Geelong senior side. An autobiography of his football career was written titled Dumb Like a Fox.
