Mark Fowler


 

Mark Fowler is a fictional character in the popular British soap opera EastEnders.

The role was originally played by David Scarboro when the series opened in 1985. However later that same year he left the series due to stress. Scarboro made a brief return appearance in 1987, but committed suicide in 1988. The role was subsequently recast, with Todd Carty taking over the role in 1990. At this time Mark was returned to the series as a permanent regular character.

Mark was the son of Arthur and Pauline Fowler, two of the key original characters in the series. Initially, Mark was a rebellious teenager who ran away from home and got involved in drugs. When he returned in 1990 he was a changed man. He had contracted HIV and confronted the Square's prejudice. Upon Arthur's knowledge of his son's HIV, he bleached the cutlery that Mark had used.

After returning to the Square Mark took over the running of the family fruit and veg stall in the market. When Peggy Mitchell learned of Mark's HIV status she was initially outraged that he was touching food and selling it. Later she realised how stupid she had been.

Mark first married Gill, his girlfriend from his early years, when they met agains she had developed full blown AIDS. The day after they married, Gill died. Mark later found love with Ruth Aitken, they married but their inablity to have children resulted in her walking out on him.

In 2001, Mark married Lisa and took on the responsibility for Lisa's newborn baby Louise. Pauline never believed that Lisa's interest in Mark was genuine. Lisa walked out on Mark in 2002 and moved into the Queen Victoria Hotel, however in a drunken rage, Mark attempted to rape her.

Mark ultimately elected to leave the Square to travel overseas. Mark died off-screen on 13th April 2004 from his AIDS-related illness.
