He was born in Rhodesia in 1967, but would move to Greece at age four, to be raised by his aunt. At age 17, he left home for London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During his years of schooling, he was performing in such productions as Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera in London's West End and would soon move toward opera singing. He moved to New York for three years to study at the Julliard School of Music and also studied with Alfredo Kraus, another reknowned tenor.

After his studies, Frangoulis would move into performing on films, television and stage productions, largely performing Greek tragedies and Skakespearean works.

He also began a recording career, starting at Sony Classical in 1998. He topped the charts in Greece and would extend his reach internationally in 2002 with Sometimes I Dream, an album that infused elements of rock, pop, and film music as well as opera. His next album, Follow Your Heart, consisting of the same elements, would follow in 2005.

In addition, 2005 saw the release of his latest album Garden of Wishes. It is a Greek album with original songs written by the poet Karasoulos Paraskevas.
