Mariah Carey (album)

Mariah Carey is the first album by Mariah Carey, released on June 12 1990 (see 1990 in music). It was very commercially successful for a debut album, eventually selling nine million copies in the United States and twice that figure worldwide. Although a slow success in the U.S., it made Carey a star there, as the four singles released from the album all went straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and the album itself spent eleven weeks on top of the Billboard 200. Its mix of pop ballads with subtle R&B tones and up-tempo numbers in various genres was able to win over many critics, however many felt she had to improve in certain areas, giving the album only moderate reviews.
