The album was poorly received by critics. It was an abrupt departure from her hit 1993 album, When I Was a Boy -- instead of that album's sophisticated pop, Maria was a jazz album. It was also her first album not to include any musical contributions from longtime collaborators such as Ken Myhr, John Switzer and Rebecca Jenkins.

In addition, the final track on the album, "Oh My My", was a 20-minute meditation on lost innocence which closely resembled the teachings of 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, and included passages quoted from "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Critics had often labelled Siberry as quirky, but this was the first track in her discography to be widely considered outright flaky.

The album was not a chart success, either in Canada or internationally. It was her last major label album. In 1996, Siberry started her own independent record label, Sheeba Records, and has released all of her subsequent recordings on that imprint.
