Margaret of Valois

Margaret of Valois (14 May 1553 – 27 March 1615) (Marguerite de Valois, Princess of France, Duchesse de Valois) was the daughter of King Henri II of France and his wife, Catherine de' Medici.

She was born at St. Germain-en-Laye.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

She married King Henri III of Navarre, a marriage arranged by Queen-Regent Catherine after the death of her husband. They were married on 18 August 1572: the ceremony brought many Protestants to Paris only to be slaughtered in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Through a series of deaths and assassinations, Henri III of Navarre came to be Henri IV of France, and four years later converted to Catholicism.

Margaret of Valois lived apart from her husband, and both had illegitimate children after their marriage, but had not children together. The marriage was dissolved on 17 December 1599 so that Henri could marry Marie de M?dicis.

Margaret died at Paris and was interred at St. Denis
