He emigrated from Ireland to the United States at the age of fifteen, arriving in New York City. He made his fortune as the owner of a copper mine in Montana, known as the Anaconda copper mine. At the time of his arrival in Butte, Montana, he was partnered with George Hearst. He invested some of his money in a stock farm, which produced Tammany, said to be the fastest horse in the world. He founded the Montana School of Mines, later known formally as Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology, or Montana Tech for short. A statue of Daly stands at the main entrance to the school at the west end of Park Street in Butte.
