Manny Ortez

Manny Ortez is the name Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry used when referencing players on the Boston Red Sox in a public appearance on July 12, 2004. There is no player named Manny Ortez. Kerry was referring to both Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, two of the team's more prominent players. He immediately caught the mistake and correctly named the two players, but the memorable gaffe stuck.

Nonetheless, since the gaffe, Kerry has been criticized by Boston locals as not being the die-hard fan he claims to be. However, the local media have begun to use the term to describe both Ramirez and Ortiz collectively. As Ramirez and Ortiz are both natives of the Dominican Republic, frequently follow each other in the batting order, and are similar power hitters, this collective noun makes a surprising amount of sense.
