Manhattan State Hospital
Manhattan State Hospital on Ward's Island in New York City was opened in 1899 when The New York State Department of Mental Hygiene took over the immigration and asylum buildings after the opening of Ellis Island. At the time, it was the largest psychiatric hospital in the world. It later became the Manhattan Psychiatric Center.
