The company was founded in 1908 through the merger of Maschinenfabrik Augsburg and Maschinenfabrik Nürnberg, to form the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg. Rudolf Diesel got a prototype for the compression ignition engine functional in early 1897 while working at a Maschinenfabrik Augsburg plant at Augsburg, Germany. In 1986 it changed its name to MAN AG. It operates worldwide under the name MAN Group.
