The name Malwa is derived from the ancient Aryan tribe of Malavas about whom very little is known, apart from the fact that they founded the Vikrama Samvat, an era dating from 57 BCE widely used in India, which is popularly associated with the king Vikramaditya. The position of the Malwa or Moholo mentioned by Hiuen Tsang (7th century) is plausibly assigned to Gujarat.
