Major
Major is the name most commonly given to the military rank equivalent to NATO rank code OF-3. It is usually immediately superior to the rank of Captain (OF-2), and immediately subordinate to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (OF-4).
Other titles
The word major has also been used as a suffix (with our without a hyphen) in various languages, for ranks above the original without this, as in Adjudant-major, Colonel-major; it still is for senior enlisted ranks such as Sergeant Major (originally a high officer), Command Sergeant Major, Drum Major and Pipe Major.

It is similarly still used as a prefix for the General officer rank of Major-General, which in many languages is also with -major, e.g. generaal-majoor in Dutch.
