Major General
Major General is a military rank used in many countries. It is derived from the older rank of Sergeant Major General. A major general is a high-ranking officer normally subordinate to a Lieutenant General and senior to a Brigadier General. In countries which do not maintain the rank of Brigadier General, Major General normally serves as the first and junior-most General rank.
Germany
The modern day military of Germany also uses the rank of Major General, referred to as Generalmajor. The rank is a successor to the Second World War title when it was the first of the German General ranks. In the modern age a German Major General ranks above a Brigadegeneral.
