Founded in 1947, as a direct response to World War II experiences, by legendary war photographer Robert Capa, David "Chim" Seymour, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and Bill Vandivert, Magnum is probably the first photographic cooperative, entirely owned and controlled by its members. Its staff supports rather than directs the photographers, and copyright is held by the authors of the works, not by the magazines that publish the images, which gives the photographers the freedom to work on inspiring projects without necessarily needing an assignment.
