Magnate

Magnate is a title of nobility commonly used in Sweden, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and some other medieval empires. This term appears to take particular significance when considering the post carolingian area in the early medieval period.

In medieval times, a bishop sometimes held territory as a magnate, collecting revenue of the manors and the associated knight's fees. The income was superior compared with the wage of other common peasants.
