Maggie's centres

The Maggie's cancer caring centres aim to help anyone who has, or has had cancer, as well as their family and friends. They are not intended as a replacement for conventional cancer therapy, but as a caring environment that can provide advice for a healthy body and mind. They are located nearby, but separate from, existing NHS hospitals.

The centres were founded by, and named after, Maggie Keswick Jencks, who, like her husband, architectural theorist Charles Jencks, believed in the ability of buildings to uplift people. Consequently, the buildings are designed by leading architects - the Dundee centre was the first building in the UK by Frank Gehry, a personal friend of Maggie's. Maggie died of cancer in 1995.
