The biggest addition to the 2006 game is the revolutionary new Superstar mode, which will allow players to create and take control of an NFL rookie and guide him through his career. Players will be allowed to take the rookie Wonderlic brain intelligence test, hire and fire agents, demand a trade, and explore the city along with many other features.

Madden NFL 06 also features the new QB Vision Control. A vision cone, which appears as a spotlight emitting from the quarterback helmet, simulates the area in which a quarterback can see. To pass to a certain receiver accurately, the vision cone must include the intended receiver. Passing to a receiver not in the cone reduces pass accuracey significantly. Quarterbacks with better range and vision will have a larger cone than others with worse range and vision. (For example, Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Brett Favre can see sideline to sideline, while Cincinnati Bengals backup Casey Bramlet has a very narrow vision.) To accompany QB Vision, there is also Precision Passing. Pressing the directional button or left analog stick in a certain direction as you pass the ball will make the throw over the receiver's head (Up), behind him (Left), in front of him (Right), or at his knees (Down). Another new feature is the truck stick, which functions like an offensive version of the hit stick from the previous year.

Madden NFL 06 will be the only NFL-Licensed football videogame, due to the 2004 deal between the NFL/NFLPA and Electronic Arts, which granted EA exclusive rights to the likeness of all: players and their names, stadiums and their names, logos, and jerseys (designs, color schemes, etc). Electronic Arts also signed a long-term deal with ESPN. This appears to create a conflict, seeing as Monday Night Football will be broadcast on ESPN (instead of ABC) starting in 2006, and that John Madden will be providing color commentary for NBC's Sunday night football coverage. Fortunately, John Madden's co-commentator, Al Michaels, is moving to ESPN.
