Louis's family had been longtime rivals of the Anjou-Durazzo family regarding the kingdom of Naples, but the last heir of that line, Joan II of Naples was childless and approaching old age. Young Louis became slowly reconciled with her, and she adopted him as her heir in 1423, granting him the traditional title of "Duke of Calabria".
