The book's popularity was mainly due to how honest the narration was, and how it realistically depicted the teenage way of thinking and dialogue. Dealing with themes such as identity, family, sex, friendship, angst, death, grief and moving on, this was all done in an either melo-dramatic/humourous way (seeing as the narrator Josie was melodramatic and very funny) or deeply moving (because underneath it all she has a heart), which was instantly recognised by teen readers.

The movie was quite faithful to the book, transporting many of the themes and situations from page to screen, but one major criticism by fans was the amalgamation of the Ivy and Carly characters into just one character, taking traits from both, instead of having the two at different parts of the movie.
