Long acre
In some countries, such as Australia and New Zealand, rural roads are separated from paddocks and fields by both a hedge or fence and a wide grass verge. Rather than leaving this verge fallow, farmers will often tether livestock on this verge to utilise pasture feed (in the form of the grass) which would otherwise be wasted. Since these "additional fields" consist of a strip some six to ten yards wide and often miles in length, they are traditionally known as The long acre.
