Live export
Live export is an agriculture term referring to the transport of livestock on an international level. Globally, millions of farm animals are transported huge distances to slaughter, or for fattening before slaughter. The trips may last anything from 9 hours to over 3 weeks and the conditions are often cramped, and lack basic requirements such as food or water. It is common for male calves (by-products of the dairy industry) to be exported from the United Kingdom to continential Europe to be reared in veal crates, now illegal in the United Kingdom.

Dehydration, overcrowding, disease and stress are more likely to occur in these conditions, and the method of slaughter which awaits the transported animals may be considerably less welfare conscious than the method of slaughter used in the animal's native country.
