Card-carrying member of the ACLU
U.S.: Used most often by conservatives to insult liberals who may advocate policies similar to that of the American Civil Liberties Union. The term became popular during the 1950s, and was used again in the 1988 presidential election, in which then-Vice President George H.W. Bush called then-Governor Michael Dukakis a "card-carrying member of the ACLU," which Dukakis proudly acknowledged. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/debatingourdestiny/dod/1988-broadcast.html It now serves as a jocular recruitment slogan for the ACLU. http://www.aclu.org/Contribute/Contribute.cfm
