National Socialists

Term sometimes used by conservatives instead of the more common "Nazi" appellation to cast negative aspersions on liberals and socialists. Usage is based on the fact that the party was founded as the "National Socialist German Workers' Party". This term is sometimes just used in place of "Nazi" to try to avoid hyperbole or potential violations of Godwin's law (see below). Although National Socialism incorporated socialist economic principles, it was different from mainstream socialism because of its racist ideology and vehement opposition to communism.
