Cheese-eating surrender monkeys
U.S.: A provocative phrase used to mock France for their famous surrenders in the Franco-Prussian War, World War II, North Africa, and French Indochina, and for their reputation as gourmets. Coined by writers of the animated television show, The Simpsons, the phrase was repeated by the political right in the United States in the run-up to the Iraq War, especially by Jonah Goldberg.
