Film
Lohan's first film role came when Nancy Meyers cast her as estranged twin sisters who meet each other at a summer camp in The Parent Trap (1998), based on a book that had been made into a Hayley Mills film in 1961. Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson co-starred as Lohan's parents in the 1998 film, which introduced the actress to a wider audience. Film critic Barbara Shulgasser called Lohan "a frighteningly poised child who is truly impressive as the long-separated twins" http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/e/a/1998/07/29/STYLE4698.dtl, and Janet Maslin of the New York Times said she "plays the dual role with apparent effortlessness and with so much forcefulness that she seems to have been taking 'shy violet' lessons from Sharon Stone." http://www.nytimes.com/library/film/072998parent-film-review.html

Her next feature was another family film, Freaky Friday (2003), a comedy for which Lohan received second billing behind Jamie Lee Curtis. Lohan and Curtis received strong reviews for their portrayals of a mother and daughter who each find themselves trapped in the other's body. The New York Posts Lou Lumenick declared the film to be "a surprisingly hilarious comedy with winning performances" http://www.nypost.com/movies/2468.htm. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun Times wrote that Lohan "has that Jodie Foster sort of seriousness and intent focus beneath her teenage persona... they're right for these roles not only because of talent, but also because of their essential natures" http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20030806/REVIEWS/308060301/1023. The film was also a huge commercial success. http://www.boxofficeguru.com/091503.htm

Lohan was given the lead in two films: Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (Disney's first non-remake involving Lohan) and Paramount's Mean Girls, both of which were released in 2004. Drama Queen, which saw Lohan play an aspiring actress whose dreams of a life of glamour are dashed when her family moves to New Jersey, was only a moderate success at the box office. Reviews were dismal; Michael O'Sullivan said Lohan was "perky" in her role, but described the film as "a crass example of all that is wrong with our consumerist, youth-worshiping culture" http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A54517-2004Feb19¬Found=true. Kimberley Jones wrote, "Lohan is sweet and terribly enthusiastic about the part... I'm mildly curious to see what she can achieve once she?s aged out of the sanitized-for-their-protection teen-movie ghetto." http://www.austinchronicle.com/gbase/Calendar/Film?Film=oid%3A197390 Mean Girls is widely considered Lohan's breakout role. The film was a hit with both critics and audiences, and made Lohan a bankable actress when it grossed over US$86 million domestically on little more than Lohan's name and a script by Tina Fey. Box office analyst Brandon Gray said that the film " her status as the new teen movie queen". Mean Girls was also Lohan's first film to receive a PG-13 rating, as all of her previous films were G- or PG-rated, family-oriented films.

Lohan's latest (2005) movie is ', the fifth film in the Herbie series (the last installment was 1980's Herbie Goes Bananas), co-starring Justin Long, Michael Keaton, Matt Dillon and Breckin Meyer. For the Walt Disney film, it was reported that Lohan's breasts had to be "digitally reduced" so that family audiences would not be offended. The film's director, Angela Robinson, and Lohan both strongly denied the rumor. http://www.suntimes.com/output/movies/cst-ftr-lohan09.html
