Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Gaboriau moved to Montreal, Quebec in 1963 to pursue education in French language and literature at McGill University. She worked as a freelance journalist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Montreal Gazette, and worked in Canadian and Québécois theatre.
