Lilydale is well known for Lilydale Lake, a recreational area where children play and learn about the environment. Surrounding the lake are a couple of modern housing estates.

Lilydale has it's own franchise of McDonalds and KFC. The Crown Hotel is a popular nightspot for party goers of the area. Lilydale also has a shopping centre named 'The Olive Tree'.

A small airport is based there, as is a campus of Swinburne University. Lilydale has three main secondary schools: Lilydale High School, Mount Lilydale Mercy College and Lilydale Heights Secondary College.
