The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), also known as Jiyū Minshutō (自由民主党, or the abbreviation Jimin-tō 自民党) is the largest political party in Japan, as of 2004. A right-wing conservative party that favors free market economic policies, it is not to be confused with the now-defunct Liberal Party (1998), which in November 2003 merged with the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Japan.

Following the dissolution of the Japanese House of Representatives on August 8, 2005, the future of the LDP has come into doubt. Many analysts expect that a sizeable number of lawmakers opposed to Junichiro Koizumi, the Prime Minister and LDP President, will leave the party.
