Lesbia
Lesbia is the lover to whom the Roman poet Catullus dedicates a number of poems. Nothing is known about her other than what can be deduced from Catullus' poems. The name itself would suggest that of a low-class prostitute. According to Apuleius, a much later author from Africa, 'Lesbia' was actually a pen name invented by Gaius Valerius Catullus (84-54BC), and is the subject of about half of his 118 surviving poems. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
