~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Kurbas was born in Galicia (then part of Austria-Hungary) on February 25th, 1887. His parents were both actors that were forced to travel with their troupe in order to earn a living. Kurbas could study the foremost Western theaters during his stay in Vienna in 1907?8, an experience that should shape his later artistic life. This was determined by the need to lead Ukrainian culture out of the provincialism it had fallen into as a result of the century-long occupation by Poland and Russia.
