The Hanzelijn project is a planned railway line Lelystad-Dronten-Kampen and upgrading of the stretch Kampen-Zwolle.

The Zuiderzeelijn is a railway studyproject which could connect Lelystad with Emmeloord, Heerenveen and Groningen. In some futuristic ideas the Zuiderzeelijn would be a magnetic levitation train that would connect Amsterdam with Groningen, Hamburg and Berlin. In the study project it could also be a simple traintrack from Groningen to Amsterdam.

Other plans for the near future include the development of the coastal area (Lelystad borders both the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer) for touristic and commercial purposes.
