Lei died in 1962, when a pole, struck by an army truck, killed him. After Lei's death, Chairman Mao Zedong started what was to be known as the "Study Lei Feng" Campaign, designed to use Lei as a good example to the Chinese people to help others and put other's priority over self's when the time requires so.
