Lei Clijsters


 

Leo Clijsters (November 9, 1956 in Opitter), nicknamed Lei, is a former professional Belgian soccer player. He was a succesful defender in the Belgian national football team, and he won the European Cup Winners Cup and the European Super Cup with K.V. Mechelen. He is married to Els and the father of tennis players Kim Clijsters and Elke Clijsters.

Lei Clijsters started his football career with Opitter FC. Later, he played for Club Brugge, SK Tongeren, Patro Eisden, Thor Waterschei, K.V. Mechelen en Club Liège. With K.V. Mechelen, he won the Belgian Cup in 1987, the European Cup Winners Cup and the European Super Cup in 1988 and the Belgian League Championship 1989 as captain of the team. In 1988, he also won the Golden Boot award as MVP of the Belgian First Division.

He played for the Belgian national team and participated in the 1986 and 1990 World Cup. In 1986, his side reached the World Cup semi-finals, however he only played two matches (he was used as substitute player against Iraq (2-1 victory) and the USSR (4-3 victory a.e.t.)). In 1990 he started against South Korea (won 2-0), Uruguay (won 3-1) and England (lost 0-1 a.e.t.). He was capped 40 times for the national team.

After his playing career came to an end, he has worked as manager with Patro Eisden, AA Gent, SK Lommel and Diest. Currently he manages the professional tennis career of his daughter Kim Clijsters
