The Lehigh Valley is historically important for its production of steel and anthracite coal. The region is located 50 miles (80 km) north of Philadelphia, the country's fifth largest city, and 90 miles (145 km) west of New York City, the country's largest city. The region is home to some 740,000 people, making it Pennsylvania's third largest metropolitan region. Recent Pennsylvania census studies show the Lehigh Valley as the fastest growing region in the state, primarily because of its growing popularity as a bedroom community for those working in New York City and Philadelphia.
