Lee Fisher

Lee Fisher (born Aug. 7, 1951, in Ann Arbor, Mich.) is an American politician. He is Jewish and a member of the Democratic party in Ohio.

Fisher is a graduate of Oberlin College, where he has served as a college trustee, and of Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He is a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. Fisher served as an Ohio state representative from 1981 to 1982 and as a Ohio state senator from 1982 to 1990. He was narrowly elected attorney general of Ohio and served in that post from 1991 to 1995. In 1994, Fisher lost his bid for re-election as Ohio attorney general to Republican Betty Montgomery.

In 1992, Fisher was appointed a presidential elector for Ohio. In 1998, Fisher ran for governor of Ohio but lost to Republican Robert A. Taft II.

During the 2004 Democratic National Convention Fisher (whose wife, Peggy Zone Fisher, was a member of the Ohio delegation), hinted that he might be interested in playing a hand in state-wide politics again. This has been taken to mean that he might consider another run for the governorship, in 2006, when Taft will be barred from running for a third consecutive term. U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, talk-show host Jerry Springer and Columbus mayor (and former running mate) Michael B. Coleman have also expressed interest in contesting for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006.
