"Phases," when Xander attempts to determine if Larry is responsible for a series of werewolf attacks, Larry misunderstands and comes to the conclusion that Xander is a closeted homosexual. This gives a humorous premise for most of the Larry and Xander conversations in later episodes, and also leads to Larry's own coming out of the closet, and the revelation of his more caring and compassionate side. In the alternate universe of "The Wish", he is one of Rupert Giles' "white hats," along with Oz and a girl named Nancy. At the end of Season 3, we see him take the front line in the battle against Mayor Richard Wilkins III, who had morphed into a giant snake. He is last seen being thrown to the ground by a swipe of the Mayor's tail. In season 6, Willow tells Amy that Larry was killed at Sunnydale High School's graduation.

Like Tara Maclay's murder, Larry's untimely demise is another reason that some fans believe that Joss Whedon suggests that homosexuality leads to an untimely and unpleasant death. Of course, the character of Willow, who appears in every episode of the series, wouldn't seem to reflect that hypothesis.
