As a granddaughter of the Monarch in the male line, she is automatically entitled to use the style of Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex from birth. However, when her parents married, they decided that their children would be styled as Earl's children rather than as Prince or Princess with the style Royal Highness. This was so they could avoid the full burden of Royal titles and the responsiblity that comes with them. However, in the absence of Letters Patent the style Lady Louise Windsor remains unofficial, and she could if she wished start to use her legal titles.
