La Sylphide
La Sylphide is one of the world's best-known ballets. There have been three main versions:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
- An original version, featuring Marie Taglioni
- Perhaps the best known version, choreographed in 1836 by August Bournonville and, in his production, with music composed by Baron Herman Severin Løvenskiold. Bournonville's version was based on the libretto of the original.
- A reconstruction of the Taglioni version by Pierre Lacotte for the Paris Opera in 1972.
La Sylphide is often confused with Les Sylphides, another ballet of similar name, also involving the mythical sylph, or forest sprite. In every other respect however, the two ballets are unrelated.
