La Galatea

La Galatea

La Galatea was Cervantes' first published book, in 1585. Under the guise of pastoral characters, it is an examination of love and contains many allusions to contemporary literary figures. It enjoyed a modest success, but was not soon reprinted. It is not a work that is easy for modern readers to enjoy.

Cervantes said several times that he was working on a continuation of La Galatea, but he died before finishing it, and whatever he had written of the continuation was lost.
