Kwame Nkrumah

Kwame Nkrumah (September 21, 1909 - April 27, 1972) was a Ghanaian politician and one of the most influential founders of Pan-Africanism.

Overthrow

Following an economic downturn, political conflict, an assassination attempt and general unrest, Nkrumah established Ghana as a one-party state with himself as Life President in 1964. Increasingly unpopular, on February 24 1966, while Nkrumah was visiting Beijing and Hanoi, his government was overthrown in a military coup supported by the CIA.
