Kurt von Finck

Kurt von Finck (full name John Kurt von Finck II) (born June 3, 1965 in Princeton, NJ USA) is a longtime proponent of Unix, Unix derivatives (especially Linux), and open source software.

von Finck began using computers in the late 70s during his high scool education at the Doane Stuart School and Northfield Mount Hermon where he began programming rudimentary code for Digital Equipment Corporation's PDP series of minicomputers. Dissatisfied with his high school level of education, von Finck began his college education in 1991 and received his BA in Medieval Studies from The Catholic University of America in 1995.

von Finck's most high profile work to date has come since 2000. He was the lead support guru for BeOS at Gobe Software before the closure of Be, Incorporated. After the demise of BeOS he was recruited to be the site manager for TechTracker's family of websites (VersionTracker, MacFixIt, and the MacFixIt Forums). More recently he has worked as part of the systems administration team for the GNOME Foundation.

von Finck is an outspoken and unabashed critic of Microsoft and their products, especially Windows.

His work on projects closely related to three major competitors to Windows (BeOS, Mac OS X, and Linux) led one Usenet user (a Microsoft employee) to quip, "If you don't run Windows, you'll meet Kurt."
