He studied at Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin where he was a theater critic and edited several socialist newspapers. He was critical about the theory of historical materialism from Marx which was a part of the dogmatic thought of the SPD (the German Social Democrats). His thought was heavily influenced by Nietzsche. He agreed with Nietzsche about equality. People should have the possibility to rise above the average and be creative. This is the only way he felt could make society better. But he regarded Nietzsche also as a monster and a sinister thinker. Eisner was a pacifist and a socialist, so he was against ideolizing of the strong that Nietzsche encouraged.
