KRON

KRON is an independent television station in the San Francisco Bay Area. It broadcasts its analog signal on VHF channel 4, and its digital signal on UHF channel 57.

The station signed on in 1949 and, until the end of 2001, was the Bay Area's NBC affiliate. The station was owned by the San Francisco Chronicle. Over the years, the station pre-empted moderate amounts of NBC shows, usually during daytime; occasionally it pre-empted prime time programming as well.

By the early 2000s, Chronicle was planning to exit the broadcasting industry, and put KRON up for sale. NBC had wanted to buy the station, but did not match Chronicle's asking price. Instead, the station was sold to Young Broadcasting. NBC and Young could not reach an affiliation agreement, and as a result, KRON's affiliation with NBC was allowed to expire on December 31, 2001, ending the 50-plus years of relationship between the two. The NBC affiliation moved to San Jose-based KNTV (which NBC would eventually purchase).
