Kokomo, Indiana

Kokomo is a city located in Howard County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 46,113. The city is the county seat of Howard County{{GR|6}}. Kokomo is Indiana's 11th largest city.

Road Construction

Kokomo and Howard County are currently working together for major road construction on Kokomo's west side. Dixon Road, Kokomo's main north-south thoroughfare on the west side will be widened to 4-lanes and is closed from Lincoln Road to the north to Alto Road to the south. Also West Sycamore Road is closed is closed from Malfalfa Road to the west to Berkley Road to the east. Sycamore will also be 4-lanes. Indiana Department of Transportation, or INDOT, is working on Sycamore Road. Dixon and Sycamore Roads should be open by Fall/Winter 2005.

Kokomo's bypass, US 31, or Reed Road, is also being considered for construction in the near future. The current bypass is not a bypass at all. Due to traffic concerns, a new bypass is in the works to bypass Kokomo's bypass. The highway is being proposed to to travel around Kokomo's east side and will be a freeway, no traffic signals, only exit and on-ramps. This has sparked some controversy in the past years to today.
